Leather is one of the oldest materials which have been the choice of most designers and sewers. The most important characteristic of this material is the robustness which it is famous for. Sewing and creating leather patterns has always been an artistic motivation and is not a cakewalk. The fur made from leather is slightly different from other types of materials. Mostly sewers first try to stitch the leather on a piece of scrap to find out the design patterns. Once done they then replicate the design patterns into the actual piece they are sewing. Leather being a peculiar material leaves holes once you have stitched it with the needle, unlike cloth where you can re-stitch the whole piece.

You need to be cautious while choosing the thickness of the leather fur in creating heavy leather patterns. The thickness of the seam determines the length of the stitch. Now days you can fuse your leather pattern with another material called leather-fuse, which is made specifically for leather. You can have elegant leather patterns through this arrangement as the leather gets fused quickly at low temperatures without damaging it, For example, if you are working with a soft type leather material then you can make use of an invisible zipper for clean and crafty look. If you are sewing leather with thick spots, the usage of rubber mallet could also be useful, but you have to protect the lather pattern by covering it with cloth to ensure you don’t scratch it.

Creating different leather patterns need a choice of various modalities, the foremost criteria being the style of stitching combined with the choice of muslin. Once you have stitched leather in specific patterns, then letting out seams and doing alterations becomes very intricate. Muslin can come to your rescue as you can take it apart and then create a new design pattern using a heavy type of paper. Apart from the designers, leather as a material has been widely accepted by architects too. Broken leather patterns are a common site in today’s living area and it significantly adds value to your home decor. This pattern is widely used to design walls and ceilings. And it is also comparatively simple to patch in any damaged area of your walls which need repairs along with a new design.

As the scope of designing in this material type is too much and once stitched, the design patterns blend well with the material; this has been the sewers choice. There are different design patterns for different products, be it your shirt, shoe or handbag. Sewing leather is not only a difficult task but also a skillful activity. You need to be little careful as you know the scope of recreating design patterns on the same piece is very limited. Thus with loads of choices and techniques for creating different leather patterns, leather as a material would be the most preferred material for designers to put their thoughts and creativity to a practical test.
